    1. Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest reviewSo for the most part this book was interesting. I liked the fact that the guy can shapeshift but has limits and it isn't the perfect ability. I also really like the personality of the dude too. It was also cool when he found out that he wasn't the only one that could change. Newman (the bad guy) could too and that was interesting! I also thought the fact that John is an anti-hero was also really cool too. Honestly, it's [...]

    2. The Changeling Detective by Phillip Berrie is a short novel about a private investigator who can change his appearance (shocking revelation based on the title, I know). It was first self-published in 2011 and has recently been picked up by Hotspur Publishing. The latter edition is the one I read.Above all, I would call this an action-packed read. There is a mystery element to it, of course, but it ends up focussing mostly on the origins of the detective rather than on an unrelated crime as it fi [...]

    3. Having read some of Phillip Berrie's work in short story anthologies, I thought I'd give this one a go. I'm glad I did. The Changeling Detective is non-stop action, which kept me guessing. It's rare to read a book where I can't see the ending coming from a mile away, but I had no idea with this one. It twists and turns with dizzying speed and a great sense of humour. The protagonist is someone with which the reader can easily identify, as he struggled to discover who and what he really is. As th [...]

    4. The Changeling Detective by Phillip Berrie is about the unwanted case of a private detective. Whilst involved in another investigation our changeling- John Adams, part of AAA Detective Agency- finds himself having bothered a crime boss. The main character is a changeling who works as a private detective, as I'm sure you'll have worked out from the title. He was orphaned at a young age and, until now; he's never really had much of an idea as to how he's obtained these special powers. Within this n [...]

    5. I loved the beginning of this book. An anti-hero detective with the mutant ability to modify his appearance. A lady sidekick who's extremely resourceful and has some magic of her own (read the book to find out which kind of magic). At the beginning, by accident, there's a run-in with a bad guy. Simple, right? Yet, this bad guy is really more than what he appears to be. In some ways, he's very closely connected to the paranormal ability of the detective hero. And thereby begins their strange inter [...]

    6. This is a reasonably short book with an interesting concept of a shape changer who uses the ability to his advantage when working as a private detective. Almost immediately characters who are somehow related to his past and unusual abilities are introduced and this creates the mystery. The story is fast paced and keeps the reader’s interest with twists and turns in the action. There is a particular theme running through the story which is clever and effective. The mystery element is explained a [...]

    7. So what is it that would make a face-changer possible? Phillip handles that wonderfully giving his main character an ability that is far from perfect. Limits and consequences is something surprisingly lacking in a lot of stories where special abilities are the perfect solution to whatever the problem is, but they never present their own range of problems. People are the same way. When confusing emergencies are thrown in our laps, we make wrong decisions all the time. Never does a person work it [...]

    8. The Changeling Detective is a solid mix of noir and fantasy, and contains plenty of tension and mystery as well.Primarily an origin story, it delves into the darker aspects of the main character's ability to change his appearance, and as such offers a refreshing take on the genre. Most of the answers give rise to more questions – with each revelation shaking the protagonist's understanding of the world to the point where he's forced to question his very existence. The characters are solid and b [...]

    9. A wonderful first novel for the author. A fast read, it starts off simple enough. But as you go through each chapter, more and more layers begin to unfold. What starts off as a mystery, soon becomes something else. Is this a fantasy? A scifi? By the end of the book, one craves to know what will happen in the sequel. I eagerly await its arrival.

    10. John has the unique ability to change the shape of his face and the sound of his voice to mimic anyone he chooses. Having hooked up with a barmaid called Ruth, they team up to find a dirty cop by the name of Brown, who murdered her father. In the meantime, a crime boss by the name of Newman, who is also a changeling, tries to kill him, but then claims to be John’s father. It turns out that both John and Newman can heal even from gunshot wounds, but are they immortal? The changeling detective is [...]

    11. This book was intriguing and a lot of fun to read. The author manages to make the changeling thing quite believable, with his description of what he can and can't do and we get to ride with the character in first person as he discovers new aspects of his ability he didn't know about. I suppose near death experiences will do that to you. The twists and turns in this book are subtle, so that I was unaware of exactly how it managed to keep me so hooked all the way. I love the humour in this book! A [...]

    12. Interesting storyline but when things started to really move along it ended! I know there's more to come but I found this frustrating. On a positive note, I definitely want to read the next book. The story is very easy to read and characters are quite likeable: a good story to choose, if you want to whizz through a book in a short space of time. Can't wait to find out more about the primary characters.
