    1. In this sequel to Second Chance, Hearn has produced another post-cyberpunk tale that very definitely puts substance over style. While it does not skimp on interesting technology and racing action, this work runs on character not tech-porn.As this is the second book in a series, this review might contain spoilers for the previous book. The novel opens two years after the events of Second Chance, with the death of the Prime Delegate’s brother in the Shambles. Caught between being seen to help the [...]

    2. Absent Souls by Dylan S. Hearn is the second part of the Transcendence trilogy and it picks up two years after Second Chance, introducing a cast of four main characters.A murder in the Shambles leaves Mick O’Driscoll with a problem. Usually he’s aware of everything happening in the area but not this time. Going to the authorities is not exactly a choice for a crime lord but he takes a chance. Investigator Nico Tandelli has his suspicions but allows O’Driscoll a chance to prove his innocenc [...]

    3. With this compelling sequel to Second Chance, Dylan Hearn develops the story further into his well-imagined dystopian future – both geographically and emotionally. The concept of a political elite, corrupted and corrupting (can’t say how because that would be a spoiler!), was fascinating in Second Chance and in Absent Souls it advances into unsettling new territory. Familiar faces are back. Most vivid for me was O’Driscoll, the vicious, violent King of the Scrambles. But here again, the au [...]

    4. Absent Souls is what you get when you cross Neuromancer, the Godfather and 1984. Indeed, not since William Gibson's Neuromancer had I come across such a convincingly chilly description of the near future. I devoured this book within a couple of days, carried away by its relentless pacing and Hearn's excellent writing. Brimming with suspense and tension, this is a book that should come with a warning, as it will be hard to put it down once you get sucked into Hearn's frightfully familiar world.

    5. Murder, sparring political factions, and cyber intrigue continue to take center stage in this second book of the Transcendence Trilogy. The reader also develops a deeper understanding of the four alternating viewpoint characters, revealing the motives behind their behaviors. Though science fiction and cyberpunk are not my usual genres, I enjoyed this book for its thriller aspects--each chapter building escalating tension and culminating in a satisfying climax where surprising answers are reveale [...]
